Fantasy Fiction Innocence Fantasy vs. Reality Friendship Childhood and Growing Up
The Little White Bird is a novel written by J. M. Barrie and first published in 1902.
Set in the beautiful Kensington Gardens of London, the novel is narrated by Captain W., a bachelor who forms a strange friendship with David, the son of his neighbors.
In a series of conversations, Captain W. recounts the fantastic stories that take place in Kensington Gardens after it closes. Both magical creatures and children who have not yet been "claimed" play freely and happily in his gardens.
One of these children is named Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up and lives in these gardens...
This novel, with its mixture of fantasy and realism, is of vital importance because it introduces us to Peter Pan for the first time.
"Sometimes the little boy who calls me father brings me an invitation from his mother: βI shall be so pleased if you will come and see me,β and I always reply in some such words as these: βDear madam, I decline.β And if David asks why I decline, I explain that it is because I have no desire to meet the woman."
