The Marvelous Land of Oz

The Marvelous Land of Oz is a fantasy novel written by L. Frank Baum and originally published in 1904. It continues the story begun in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The events take place shortly after the story told in the first book. Tip is a boy who lives in the northern country of Oz and has been raised by the wicked witch Mombi. The boy lives a dull and hard life on the farm, where the days go by in a nondescript way.

One day, Tip carves a pumpkin head and places it on a wooden body to frighten Mombi, creating Jack Pumpkinhead. Mombi tests her Powder of Life on Jack and brings him to life, then threatens to turn Tip into a marble statue.

Faced with this threat, Tip flees with Jack Pumpkinhead and sets out for the Emerald City. There, General Jinjur’s Army of Revolt has overthrown the Scarecrow, sending Tip and his companions to seek help from the Tin Woodman and Glinda as Tip moves toward the discovery of his own identity.

"In the Country of the Gillikins, which is at the North of the Land of Oz, lived a youth called Tip. There was more to his name than that, for old Mombi often declared that his whole name was Tippetarius; but no one was expected to say such a long word when "Tip" would do just as well.
This boy remembered nothing of his parents, for he had been brought when quite young to be reared by the old woman known as Mombi, whose reputation, I am sorry to say, was none of the best. For the Gillikin people had reason to suspect her of indulging in magical arts, and therefore hesitated to associate with her."
