The Luck of Roaring Camp is a western short story written by Bret Harte and first published in 1870.

Roaring Camp is a rough mining village in California during the Gold Rush. Practically the entire population are men, rough miners hardened. by this kind of life

Their lives are turned upside down when a boy named Tommy Luck is born. Known by his nickname "The Luck", he is the son of the only woman in the camp. The woman dies during childbirth and the boy is an orphan from day one.

The miners take care of the child and gradually improve his behavior, trying to ensure that the poor baby's innocence is not tainted by the harshness of their world. Everyone pulls together to give him the best possible future, which becomes an opportunity for devotion and kindness.

The story is an exploration of human nature that challenges perceptions of masculinity at the time. It is a beautiful and moving story that shows how hope can sometimes come from the most unexpected places and bring about transformative change in society.

"There was commotion in Roaring Camp. It could not have been a fight, for in 1850 that was not novel enough to have called together the entire settlement. The ditches and claims were not only deserted, but "Tuttle's grocery" had contributed its gamblers, who, it will be remembered, calmly continued their game the day that French Pete and Kanaka Joe shot each other to death over the bar in the front room. The whole camp was collected before a rude cabin on the outer edge of the clearing."
