The Mystery of a Hansom Cab

The Mystery of a Hansom Cab is a detective novel written by Fergus Hume and first published in 1886.

Set in Melbourne, Australia, the story begins when a man named Oliver Whyte is found dead inside a hansom cab. Evidence suggests that he was poisoned, and the unusual circumstances of the crime lead to a complex murder investigation.

Suspicion soon falls on Brian Fitzgerald, who had quarreled with the victim over Madge Frettlby, the woman they both wished to marry. Although the evidence against him appears convincing, Fitzgerald refuses to reveal information that could prove his innocence because doing so would expose a damaging family secret.
