Children's literature Fantasy Adventure Magic Family Growth
The Phoenix and the Carpet is a fantasy novel for children written by E. Nesbit and first published in 1904.
It continues the story of Five Children and It, with the same five children. Their mother buys a carpet for the nursery since the previous one was burned in an accidental fire. Suddenly, the children find a strange egg on the new carpet, from which a Phoenix hatches. The talking Phoenix tells the children that the carpet is magical and that it will grant these three wishes each day.
These wishes will allow children to embark on many adventures and fulfill many fantasies, although from so much use they gradually wear out the carpet. The denouement of the adventures ends in The Story of the Amulet.
The Phoenix and the Carpet is the second volume in the trilogy Five Children Series. The others books in the trilogy are Five Children and It and The Story of the Amulet.
