The Ransom of Red Chief by O. Henry — cover

The Ransom of Red Chief

The Ransom of Red Chief is a short story by O. Henry, first published in 1907.

The story follows two criminals who kidnap a wealthy man's young son and plan to demand a ransom for his return. Their scheme quickly goes wrong when the boy proves to be energetic, fearless, and delighted by the adventure.

Instead of behaving like a frightened captive, the child torments his kidnappers with games, threats, and constant demands for attention. Before long, the kidnappers become more desperate to get rid of him than to collect the ransom.

With its comic reversals and characteristic irony, The Ransom of Red Chief is a humorous story about failed plans, unexpected consequences, and the reversal of power. O. Henry turns a criminal plot into a farce in which the supposed victims gain the upper hand.
