The Velveteen Rabbit is a children's book written by Margery Williams and published in 1922. It is illustrated by William Nicholson.
In The Velveteen Rabbit we find the story of a stuffed rabbit that becomes real through the love of its owner, a little boy.
The story begins when the boy is given the stuffed rabbit for Christmas. However, the child forgets about it and plays with more modern toys.
One day the rabbit hears a story told by another toy, the wisest of them all, in which he tells him that he can become real thanks to the love of children. The rabbit is fascinated by this idea and will try to get it, but his chances seem very slim...
This story narrates the phases that children live and go through, as well as it is a reflection of the desire of all people to be loved and to be able to realize our dreams.
"There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid. He was fat and bunchy, as a rabbit should be; his coat was spotted brown and white, he had real thread whiskers, and his ears were lined with pink sateen. On Christmas morning, when he sat wedged in the top of the Boy's stocking, with a sprig of holly between his paws, the effect was charming".
