A History of New York is a satirical work written by Washington Irving and first published in 1809 under the fictional authorship of Diedrich Knickerbocker. Presented as a historical chronicle, the book humorously recounts the early Dutch settlement and government of New York.
Beginning with an exaggerated account of the creation of the world and the discovery of America, Irving gradually turns his attention to the Dutch colony of New Netherland. He describes its governors, political disputes, military affairs, and everyday customs while deliberately mixing historical events with absurd inventions and comic exaggeration.
Through the supposed historian Knickerbocker, Irving creates a parody of serious historical writing, mocking pompous scholars, politicians, colonial leaders, and human ambition. The book also satirizes political conflicts and social attitudes familiar to readers in the early United States.
Combining history, fiction, and humor, A History of New York helped establish Irving's literary reputation and popularized the figure of the fictional Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker. Its playful treatment of New York's colonial past became an important part of the city's literary mythology.
"The history of the reign of Peter Stuyvesant furnishes an edifying picture of the cares and vexations inseparable from sovereignty, and a solemn warning to all who are ambitious of attaining the seat of honor. Though returning in triumph and crowned with victory, his exultation was checked on observing the abuses which had sprung up in New Amsterdam during his short absence."
