Miss Lulu Bett is a novel written by Zona Gale and originally published in 1920. It was later adapted by the author herself as a play.
Set in life in the Midwestern United States, the novel introduces us to Miss Lulu Bett. She is a 33-year-old woman who is still single and lives with her sister and her sister's family, and works there as a housekeeper.
Lulu is shy and introverted, and is often silenced by her brother-in-law. She is unhappy, but does not complain about it.
Events change when Lulu meets Ninian, her brother-in-law's brother, and a romance develops between them. Little by little Lulu will gain more self-confidence and the courage to free herself as a woman and confront all those who manipulate or belittle her.
"The Deacons were at supper. In the middle of the table was a small, appealing tulip plant, looking as anything would look whose sun was a gas jet. This gas jet was high above the table and flared, with a sound.
"Better turn down the gas jest a little," Mr. Deacon said..."

A quiet revolt in a kitchen chair. Zona Gale turns a stifled life into a clear, unsentimental study of courage, class, and the cost of pleasing everyone. Brief, bracing, and real about the moment a woman chooses herself over habit.
Domestic expectations still linger—in family chats, workplaces, and small towns. Reading this now clarifies people-pleasing, boundary setting, and the difference between niceness and respect. It’s a humane primer on saying no, asking for more, and shaping a life that answers back.
From nice to respected.
Roles that confine.
Quiet courage, clear steps.
