Miss Lulu Bett is a novel written by Zona Gale and originally published in 1920. It was later adapted by the author herself as a play.

Set in life in the Midwestern United States, the novel introduces us to Miss Lulu Bett. She is a 33-year-old woman who is still single and lives with her sister and her sister's family, and works there as a housekeeper.

Lulu is shy and introverted, and is often silenced by her brother-in-law. She is unhappy, but does not complain about it.

WHY READ MISS LULU BETT IN 2025?

104 years later, still timely

A quiet revolt in a kitchen chair. Zona Gale turns a stifled life into a clear, unsentimental study of courage, class, and the cost of pleasing everyone. Brief, bracing, and real about the moment a woman chooses herself over habit.

TODAY'S CONNECTION

Domestic expectations still linger—in family chats, workplaces, and small towns. Reading this now clarifies people-pleasing, boundary setting, and the difference between niceness and respect. It’s a humane primer on saying no, asking for more, and shaping a life that answers back.
