Mrs. Warren's profession is a play written by George Bernard Shaw in 1894.

"Summer afternoon in a cottage garden on the eastern slope of a hill a little south of Haslemere in Surrey. Looking up the hill, the cottage is seen in the left hand corner of the garden, with its thatched roof and porch, and a large latticed window to the left of the porch. A paling completely shuts in the garden, except for a gate on the right. The common rises uphill beyond the paling to the sky line. Some folded canvas garden chairs are leaning against the side bench in the porch. A lady’s bicycle is propped against the wall, under the window. "

WHY READ MRS. WARREN'S PROFESSION IN 2025?

131 years later, still timely

Shaw argues with the audience and wins. A mother, a daughter, and an economy that leaves few choices: the play is brisk, funny, and surgical about hypocrisy. It refuses tidy answers while demanding honest ones.

TODAY'S CONNECTION

Debates on sex work, labor rights, and women’s autonomy are loud again. The play supplies vocabulary, nuance, and the habit of asking who benefits from moral panic.

Moral economics

Follow the incentives.

Argument as art

Dialogue that clarifies fog.

Beyond slogans and shaming.
