Northanger Abbey is a romance novel written by Jane Austen and published in 1803. It was the author's first published novel, although she had previously begun writing Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility.

This novel tells the story of the visit of Catherine Morland together with her friends, the Allen couple, to the city of Bath in England. The protagonist, only seventeen years old, takes advantage of her visit by going to dances with friends like Isabella Thorpe. There, a couple of men try to seduce her: on the one hand John Thorpe, a friend of her brother, and on the other Henry Tilney.

Henry Tilney is a cultured man with a lot of literary culture and the world in general. Catherine befriends his little sister, and her siblings invite her to her father's estate, called Northanger Abbey...

The book deals with the absurd complications of high society, especially when choosing a partner to marry, and highlights the conflicts between love marriages and marriages of convenience.
