Tales of the Five Towns

Tales of the Five Towns is a short-story collection by Arnold Bennett, first published in 1905. Its setting is the industrial pottery district of Staffordshire that Bennett transformed into the fictional Five Towns.

The first group of stories stays close to home, observing civic pride, family bargaining, romance, money, and reputation in communities where neighbors know one another's histories. Bennett finds drama in wills, business decisions, courtships, public ceremonies, and private disappointments.

A second group follows Five Towns characters beyond the region, where travel and prosperity do not free them from the habits formed at home. Across both sections, dry humor and precise social observation reveal the emotional pressure beneath ordinary routines.
