The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People is a play by Oscar Wilde written in 1895. The book is a comedy that deals with the customs and seriousness of society.
The play is set in England during the Victorian era and the main plot revolves around the protagonist John and Earnest, his fictional brother.
Jack adopts a different personality each time he travels to London where he meets his beloved girlfriend Gwendolen, whom he plans to marry under the identity of Earnest. Jack's best friend, named Algy Moncrieff, also adopts the personality of Earnest to make young Cecily fall in love.
These two men pretend to be Earnest to try to marry two women whose dream is to find a man named Earnest and marry him. However, by adopting a false identity, they will embark on many messes and entanglements in their lives that they will have to solve.
