Children's literature Fantasy Adventure Friendship Magic
The Patchwork Girl of Oz is a novel written by L. Frank Baum and first published in 1913 and it is the seventh book in the Oz series.
The story begins when Ojo, a Munchkin boy, and his Unc Nunkie visit the home of Dr Pipt, a wizard who creates the Dust of Life.
This powder can animate inanimate objects, and Dr Pipt plans to bring to life a Patchwork Girl made of cloth and stuffing to serve as his wife's assistant.
However, an accident occurs when the Patchwork Girl, named Scraps, comes to life, and Unc Nunkie and Dr Pipt's wife are turned to stone by the misuse of the magic potion. To save them, Ojo must gather unusual ingredients to make an antidote: a six-leaf clover, water from a dark well and other unusual objects.
Accompanied by Scraps, the Crystal Cat and Woozy, Ojo embarks on an adventurous journey through Oz.
Along the way they encounter quirky and sometimes dangerous characters and challenges, including a strict law against collecting six-leaf clovers in the Emerald City. In the end, with the help of Dorothy,
""Where's the butter, Unc Nunkie?" asked Ojo.
Unc looked out of the window and stroked his long beard. Then he turned to the Munchkin boy and shook his head.
"Isn't," said he.
"Isn't any butter? That's too bad, Unc. Where's the jam then?" inquired Ojo, standing on a stool so he could look through all the shelves of the cupboard. But Unc Nunkie shook his head again.
"Gone," he said.
"No jam, either? And no cake—no jelly—no apples—nothing but bread?"
"All," said Unc, again stroking his beard as he gazed from the window."
