The Scarecrow of Oz

The Scarecrow of Oz is a children's fantasy novel by L. Frank Baum, first published in 1915. It is the ninth book in the Oz series.

A boating accident carries Trot and her sailor friend Cap'n Bill into an underground cavern. With the help of a flying creature called the Ork, they travel through a succession of strange countries before reaching Jinxland, an isolated corner of Oz cut off by high mountains.

Jinxland is ruled by the cruel King Krewl, who has taken the throne from Princess Gloria. Gloria loves the gardener's son Pon, but the king and the wealthy Googly-Goo employ a witch to destroy that bond and secure their own plans.

Glinda sends the Scarecrow to investigate, bringing the travelers together in a comic rebellion against an unjust ruler. Success depends less on force than on cooperation among characters whose unusual abilities seem ridiculous until precisely the right moment.

Baum combines fairy-tale romance, transformation magic, and political satire in an adventure that introduces Trot and Cap'n Bill to Oz. Beneath its playful inventions, The Scarecrow of Oz emphasizes courage, legitimate leadership, and the duty to help people trapped under arbitrary power.
