The sleeper awakes is a science fiction novel written by H.G. Wells in 1899.
Graham is an ordinary man who suffers from insomnia and undergoes treatment to help him sleep with a "small" problem: he sleeps much more than expected. Graham falls asleep in 1897 and wakes up in 2100, two centuries later.
When he wakes up, he sees that the world as he knew it no longer exists and he finds a dejected society with great inequalities, both economic and with problems of class and racism.
In addition, Graham has become the wealthiest person on the planet, as his money has been generating wealth while he slept thanks to managers who never expected him to wake up. That money has contributed to degenerate society to that point. His world, culture and people close to him have disappeared and Graham will try to restore order and improve the planet...
"One afternoon, at low water, Mr. Isbister, a young artist lodging at Boscastle, walked from that place to the picturesque cove of Pentargen, desiring to examine the caves there. Halfway down the precipitous path to the Pentargen beach he came suddenly upon a man sitting in an attitude of profound distress beneath a projecting mass of rock. The hands of this man hung limply over his knees, his eyes were red and staring before him, and his face was wet with tears".
