The Tin Woodman of Oz is a children's fantasy novel by L. Frank Baum, first published in 1918. It is the twelfth book in the Oz series.
When Woot the Wanderer visits the Tin Woodman, a simple question revives an unfinished part of Nick Chopper's past: why has he never returned to Nimmie Amee, the young woman he loved before losing his human body? Nick sets out to find her, accompanied by Woot and the Scarecrow.
The journey leads through unfamiliar corners of Oz, where transformations and enchanted obstacles repeatedly alter the travelers' appearances. They also meet Captain Fyter, a Tin Soldier whose history is unexpectedly connected to Nick's own.
What begins as a search for a former sweetheart becomes a playful investigation of identity. If a person's body has been replaced piece by piece, what makes that person the same individual—and does having a kind heart depend on possessing a physical one?
Baum balances these questions with wordplay, odd creatures, and comic adventure. The Tin Woodman of Oz gives one of the series' most familiar characters a thoughtful story about memory, promises, love, and respecting another person's freedom to choose.
