The Watsons

The Watsons is Jane Austen's unfinished novel, written around 1803–04 and first published as a fragment in 1871. This download also contains a later continuation by L. Oulton.

Emma Watson has been raised by a wealthy aunt but must return when that aunt remarries. She rejoins an ailing father and siblings shaped by limited means, marriage plans, and mutual resentments, making home a precarious return rather than a secure refuge.

At her first local ball, Emma's kindness to an overlooked boy attracts Lord Osborne, while Tom Musgrave's practiced charm and the steadier Mr. Howard complicate the family's expectations. Courtship is inseparable from economic and social pressure.

Austen abandoned the manuscript before resolving these relationships. Oulton's continuation carries the plot beyond that surviving fragment, so the volume offers two authors in one narrative; its completed ending should not be attributed to Austen.

A long list of county families was confidently run over as sure of attending, and sanguine hopes were entertained that the Osbornes themselves would be there."
