Three Men in a Boat is a humorous novel written by Jerome K. Jerome and first published in 1889.
A group of friends are gathered one day complaining about their health problems and their work problems, and decide to take a trip, starting to make plans about it. Once they have decided on the type of trip, they have to start the preparations: a tent to sleep in, what food to bring... until they start their adventure on the boat upriver.
The book recounts Jerome K. Jerome's own vacation on the River Thames. Although the writer conceived it as a kind of travel guide about the route he took, its humorous tone combined with the serious and sentimental passages made it a humorous novel.
Jerome himself is narrator J and recounts the journey along with his two real friends George Wingrave and Carl Hentschel, while the character of the dog, Montmorency, is made up.
