American wit with moral bite; comedy that protects dignity while exposing cant.
1835 – 1910 · United States | 15 books | Popular now: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Samuel Langhorne Clemens was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was lauded as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced", and William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature". His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.
Twain was born shortly after an appearance of Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it" as well; he died the day after the comet made its closest approach to the Earth.
Honesty sounds like music. He exposes cant without bitterness and loves people without lying about them. Humor, travel, and risk become tools for moral seeing. Read him to test your ear for truth, enjoy comedy that protects dignity, and remember that kindness can be quick and sharp at once.
