The Gilded Age is a novel written by Mark Twain, in 1873.

This edition of The Gilded Age is based on American Publishing Company, Hartford, 1873 edition with Charles Dudley Warner as a Co-author.

"June 18- Squire Hawkins sat upon the pyramid of large blocks, called the “stile,” in front of his house, contemplating the morning. The locality was Obedstown, East Tennessee. You would not know that Obedstown stood on the top of a mountain, for there was nothing about the landscape to indicate it—but it did: a mountain that stretched abroad over whole counties, and rose very gradually. The district was called the “Knobs of East Tennessee,” and had a reputation like Nazareth, as far as turning out any good thing was concerned".

This book is illustrated with original drawings.

WHY READ THE GILDED AGE IN 2025?

152 years later, still timely

Speculation, influence, and big promises wrapped in broad American comedy. Twain and Warner skewer boom-and-bust optimism while keeping the jokes snappy and the targets familiar.

TODAY'S CONNECTION

Timely when headlines cycle through real estate bubbles and political showmanship. Town halls, railroad schemes, and press theatrics feel uncomfortably close to now, making it strong for civics-minded reading groups.

Money and power

Public deals, private gains, hard lessons.

Media spectacle

Hype machines and manufactured momentum.

American patchwork

Regions, railroads, and restless growth.

Perfect for

Fans of American History Satire Enthusiasts Mark Twain Aficionados
