A Princess of Mars is a science fantasy novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, first serialized in 1912. It is the first book in the Barsoom series.
John Carter, a veteran of the American Civil War, is mysteriously transported to Mars, known to its inhabitants as Barsoom. The planet's lower gravity gives him unusual strength, and he becomes caught between rival peoples while trying to protect Dejah Thoris, a princess of the city of Helium.
"I am a very old man; how old I do not know. Possibly I am a hundred, possibly more; but I cannot tell because I have never aged as other men, nor do I remember any childhood. So far as I can recollect I have always been a man, a man of about thirty. "
