The Bet is a short story written by Russian author Anton Chekhov and first published in 1889.
The story begins at a party where a banker and a young lawyer argue about whether capital punishment or life imprisonment is more humane. The disagreement leads to an extraordinary wager: the lawyer agrees to spend fifteen years in complete isolation in exchange for two million rubles.
During his confinement, the lawyer devotes himself to reading, studying languages, philosophy, history, and religion. As the years pass, his understanding of life changes dramatically. Meanwhile, the banker loses much of his fortune and becomes increasingly desperate as the end of the wager approaches.
On the final night, the banker considers a terrible act to avoid paying the money, but discovers that the lawyer has undergone a profound rejection of wealth and material ambition. The story explores morality, knowledge, greed, freedom, and the true value of human life.
"It was a dark autumn night. The old banker was walking up and down his study and remembering how, fifteen years before, he had given a party one autumn evening. There had been many clever men there, and there had been interesting conversations."
