The Gods of Mars is a science fantasy novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1913.
The book is set immediately after A Princess of Mars, which leaves us with a final cliffhanger that is resolved right at the beginning of this book and leads to a new adventure in the world of Barsoom.
John Carter returns to Mars to travel to a place the Martians consider paradise. His journey will be full of obstacles, battles and reunions with old characters and will lead him to discover a great deception that his sense of justice will force him to reveal to the inhabitants.
The book expands the universe created by Edgar Rice Burroughs with new races and monsters, detailed descriptions of the places and divine beings that are part of the traditions of Mars.
"As I stood upon the bluff before my cottage on that clear cold night in the early part of March, 1886, the noble Hudson flowing like the grey and silent spectre of a dead river below me, I felt again the strange, compelling influence of the mighty god of war, my beloved Mars, which for ten long and lonesome years I had implored with outstretched arms to carry me back to my lost love".

108 years later, still timely
Red deserts, sky galleons, and rescue at impossible odds—Burroughs proves adventure can move like music. John Carter’s return to Barsoom tests loyalty, imagination, and the thrill of unapologetic pulp done with momentum and heart.
Big franchises began with books like this. Its fearless pace, worldbuilding, and romantic heroism show why escapism works—and how courage, honor, and curiosity still feel fresh when the wonder is earned on every page.
Set pieces that genuinely sing.
Barsoom feels traveled, not told.
Loyalty that refuses cynicism.
