Anthony Trollope

Institutions work and marriage drawn with patient candid warmth.

Anthony Trollope was an English novelist and long-serving civil servant whose work maps the everyday machinery of Victorian society—its churches, Parliament, newspapers, and drawing rooms—with patient realism and sly wit. Over dozens of novels he explored how ambition, money, and marriage shape character, helping define the nineteenth-century English novel for subsequent generations.

Before fame, Trollope built a steady career in the General Post Office, including years in Ireland and extensive inspection tours. He is widely credited with recommending the early British pillar boxes in the Channel Islands—an innovation that made posting letters far easier—and his administrative eye later sharpened his fiction’s feeling for institutions.

His best-loved cycle is the Barsetshire series, beginning with The Warden and continuing through Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, where he turns ecclesiastical politics into quietly thrilling social drama. He also wrote the Palliser (Parliamentary) novels—Can You Forgive Her?, Phineas Finn, The Eustace Diamonds, Phineas Redux, The Prime Minister, and The Duke’s Children—a panoramic study of power, policy, and private life.

Beyond these sequences, landmarks include The Way We Live Now, a ferocious satire of speculative mania and media spin, and He Knew He Was Right, a psychologically acute study of jealousy and marriage. Trollope’s famously disciplined routine—early mornings at the desk, pages counted with clerkly precision—fed a remarkably consistent output, even as he unsuccessfully ran for Parliament in 1868, experiences that ripple through his political fiction.
