Although a physician by profession, Doyle discovered that his true calling was writing, in which he excelled with a keen understanding of human nature and a keen observation of detail. The Sherlock Holmes stories are generally regarded as milestones in the field of detective fiction. Doyle pushed the boundaries of the genre, giving it greater complexity and depth than it had previously possessed.

It is impossible to talk about Doyle without mentioning his most iconic character: the incomparable Sherlock Holmes. This detective, always accompanied by his faithful Dr. Watson, stands out for his great deductive reasoning and his unique personality, both of which have become cultural symbols. In Doyle's stories, the two confront the most cunning criminals of London society.

And Doyle's talent was not limited to the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The Scottish author also has other lesser known but equally brilliant works, among which we can highlight the science fiction novel The Lost World.

He is one of the authors whose work has been adapted to film and television more than once. If we had to choose one of them, we would go for the Sherlock series created by the BBC and starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

That's why we at AliceAndBooks encourage you to discover the exciting universe created by Doyle, and we can't think of a better place to start than with the first Sherlock Holmes novel: A Study in Scarlet.

Sherlock and civic attention in 2026

Observation becomes a civic skill. The stories model how to ask, test, and revise without cruelty, and how facts arrive through people. In an age of data, empathy refines inference. Read him to practice attention, resist haste, and enjoy puzzles that respect the intelligence of the reader.
