Cup of Gold
Cup of Gold is a novel by John Steinbeck, first published in 1929. It is Steinbeck's debut novel and is loosely based on the life of the Welsh privateer Henry Morgan.
The story follows a young man driven by ambition and dreams of adventure who leaves his home in Wales to seek his fortune overseas. His pursuit of glory leads him into a violent world of piracy, conquest and shifting loyalties.
As he gains power, he becomes obsessed with the legendary city of Panama, known as the 'Cup of Gold', and with a mysterious woman called La Santa Roja. His pursuit of both becomes a symbol of impossible desire, revealing the emptiness behind conquest and fame.
The novel combines historical adventure with a reflective study of ambition, illusion and disappointment. Although it is different from Steinbeck’s later realist works, it already shows his interest in human longing and the cost of chasing unreachable dreams.
