The Sound and the Fury is a novel written by William Faulkner and first published in 1929.
Faulkner presents us in this novel with the Compson family, a once-prominent Southern dynasty now in decline. He offers a view of the world through the perspectives of various family members: Benjy, a man with an intellectual disability whose perception is pure yet disconnected from time; Jason, cold and calculating; and Quentin, consumed by bitter despair.
The novel explores themes such as the passage of time, loss, and the collapse of a society in crisis. The Sound and the Fury is not only one of Faulkner's greatest novels but also one of the masterpieces of 20th-century literature.
"Through the fence, between the curling flower spaces, I could see them hitting. They were coming toward where the flag was and I went along the fence. Luster was hunting in the grass by the flower tree. They took the flag out, and they were hitting."
