The warlord of Mars is a science fantasy novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1919. This novel is the third book of Barsoom series.
The story continues after the abrupt end of the previous installment of the series, The Gods of Mars. Princess Dejah Thoris, wife of John Carter, has been taken prisoner in the Temple of the Sun by the suitor goddess Issus.
She has been imprisoned in a room that, after a Barsoomian year, will once again align and rotate towards the entrance.
John Carter will put his own life on the line to try to rescue his wife in a series of adventures on the red planet, behind his enemies though always one step behind.
"In the shadows of the forest that flanks the crimson plain by the side of the Lost Sea of Korus in the Valley Dor, beneath the hurtling moons of Mars, speeding their meteoric way close above the bosom of the dying planet, I crept stealthily along the trail of a shadowy form that hugged the darker places with a persistency that proclaimed the sinister nature of its errand".
