Sophocles

Tragedy with clear ethics; fate choice and speech tested in public.

Sophocles was an ancient Greek tragedian. He wrote over 120 plays, but only seven have survived in a complete form. For almost fifty years, Sophocles was the most celebrated playwright in the dramatic competitions of the city-state of Athens which took place during the religious festivals of the Lenaea and the Dionysia.

What tragedy teaches in 2026

Sophocles sets family and law on a bright hard stage. Pride love and duty meet under rules that feel exact rather than antique. The language is simple the questions permanent. Read him to practice judgment without slogans and to see how a city learns by watching truth spoken at cost.
