In the world of classical literature by default men are the center of attention, it's easy to forget about the women who have left their mark on history. But there have been many inspirational women classical writers who have been crucial in bringing about literature as we know it.

Some of these women were ahead of their time, standing up to the prejudices of the time. Here are some examples of inspirational women writers. At the end of the article you will find a list of books by them to download in PDF or ePub.

Jane Austen: I think it goes without saying that Austen's work is known worldwide. One of the most famous and recognized classic writers, she is known for her sharp social commentary and witty wit. Her novels have been adapted for film and television numerous times, and remain popular today.
Charlotte Bronte: Another critically beloved classic writer. Bronte's work is characterized by its gothic atmosphere and passionate romance. Her most famous novel, Jane Eyre, is a timeless classic.
Edith Wharton: Wharton was a prolific writer of novels, short stories and nonfiction. She was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and her work is known for its insight into the upper class of society.
Willa Cather: Cather is considered one of the most important writers of the early 20th century. Her work often focuses on the American West and her novels are known for their lyrical prose.
Louisa May Alcott:: Alcott is best known for her novel Little Women. She was a prolific writer who also wrote short stories, poems and nonfiction and she was an active advocate for women's rights and her work reflects her progressive views.
